The Palace of Versailles in a Nutshell

Versailles is one of the most popular day trips from Paris.Click here for the list of best day trips from Paris

Château de Versailles or Palace of Versailles was home to three French Kings and their courts.

  • King Louis XIV and his wife Queen Maria Theresa of Spain
  • King Louis XV (great-grandson of King Louis XIV) and his wife Queen Marie Leszczyńska
  • King Louis XVI (grandson of King Louis XV) and his wife Queen Marie-Antoinette

King Louis XIV moved to Versailles in 1682. The young King was wary of Paris, a city that he saw revolt in 1648. The city was seen as a dangerous concentration of epidemics, fires, floods, congestion, and disorders of all kinds.

The Sun King and his successors turned Versailles, a modest hunting lodge, into a seat of power. With the Gardens and the Palaces of Trianon, the Versailles Estate spreads over 800 hectares!

The heydays of Versailles ended abruptly when the Royal Family was forced to leave the Palace in 1789 (see our article about the French Revolutionin Paris).

When you visit the Palace of Versailles inside, concentrate all your energy in this part of the Palace for a lighter visit to the rest of the rooms.

Most of the salons are dedicated to a Greek God or Goddess, who usually appears in the decoration of the rooms under different forms.

Among these salons, the Apollo Salon is the most important. King Louis XIV identified himself with Apollo, the Sun God, and it is here where we find the throne room. The silver furniture and the 2.6 high throne have disappeared but the decoration gives us an idea of how impressive this Salon was!

Hall of Mirrors

This is the most impressive room inside the Palace of Versailles, a 73-meter gallery with a beautiful vaulted ceiling and impressive chandeliers.

The King used this gallery every day to go to the Royal Chapel and also to the Queen's apartments. This gallery was used also for elegant balls and important audiences.

With the reopening of the Palace of Versailles after the lockdown, the Hall of Mirrors can be seen only from the sides. This has the advantage of beautiful pictures with 0 crowds and we really liked the idea.

GOOD TO KNOW: We have heard that some travelers book their Palace of Versailles skip the line tickets for the first time slot of the day and once they enter the Palace they go straight to the Hall of Mirrors to have pictures without crowds and they visit the rest of the Palace later. After the lockdown, the Palace proposes only a one-way itinerary so if you go straight to the Hall of Mirrors you won't be allowed to go back to visit the first rooms later.

The Bull's Eye Room

This small anti-chamber takes its name from the bull's eye windows that you can see integrated into the ceiling frieze. The Bull's Eye Room is far from being the most impressive room inside the Palace of Versailles but Americans visiting Paris will be interested to know that this is the room where Benjamin Franklin was waiting to be received by King Louis XVI in 1778 to get the military support of France in the War of Independence. That support later led to the signing of the American Declaration of Independence in Versailles in 1783.

The Queen's Chamber

This is the main room of the Queen's Apartments and also the most beautifully decorated. The Queen slept here and she also held private audiences in this room.

The first two Queens in Versailles died in this room which currently shows a bust of Queen Marie-Antoinette, who also slept here. On your left, you can see the secret door that Queen Marie-Antoinette used to escape her apartments when the people assaulted Versailles.

The Gallery of Great Battles

Versailles Slot Usa History

The visit inside the Palace of Versailles ends with the Gallery of Great Battles. This huge gallery is like an open book of French history. It was created much later, by King Louis Philippe who decided to make the Palace a museum of French history.

The Gallery of Great Battles is decorated with 33 huge paintings celebrating French victories from 496 to 1809. If you want to learn more about French history, stop at the paintings that impress you most and read the short description of the battle.

The busts that decorate the gallery belong to princes, nobles, and important war men who lost their lives in a battle. Do you recognize any of them?

This is the first slot I have come across themed on the French Royal family and the Versailles palace. It is a colourful 5 reel video slot, with some very distinctive graphics work. There is nothing particularly outstanding in the game-play. You'll find a free spins game with a special expanding symbol, and the usual EGT progressive jackpots. If you enjoy the historical slot games, then this one is just about unique enough to be worth taking for a spin.

You'll see a graphic of the Versailles palace in the background of the reels, with pathways winding through gardens at the bottom of the screen and decorated skies above. The reels all have a circular decoration behind the symbols and are beige. The royal family is drawn in a classical style, which does feel a little out of place on a video slot game. Kings had long hair back then, and a stern looking character is the main symbol for this game. There is a queen, carriage, and a golden jewel which looks like it could be based on the sun. Animations are short, for example the queen walking down some stairs – nothing too special though they do add some life to the slot. Sounds are classical and do sound fairly regal to my untrained ears.

Versailles Slot Usa Game

The default number of win lines is 10, which is low compared to many other 5 reel, 3 row video slots. You can even reduce this further, with 7, 5 3 and 1 all options on the bars at either side of the reels. Bets start at just 10 coins (presumably 10c) with default betting buttons going up to 200 coins. As always with EGT slots there are gamble-after-win and auto play options available.

Considering you can bet from just 10 coins, the 5000 coin top regular prize is fairly generous. This is for 5 of the king symbols on a win-line. You'll get 1000 coins for 4, 100 for 3 and 10 for just 2 kings from the left hand side.

Wild symbols are the golden sun-like jewel, and will substitute for all of the other symbols to create winning combinations (no exceptions like in many games). If you get 5 wilds on a win-line, the prize is 2500 coins, with 250 for 4 and 20 for just 3. What is more, 3 or more of these wild symbols get you 12 free spins.

Versailles Slot Usa Today

The queen is worth 2000 coins for 2, the cardinal 750, the carriage also pays 750 for 5 and the playing cards make up those smaller but still important wins.

The 12 free spins game comes with a special ‘expanding symbol'; this system is also used in other EGT slots and probably available on other online slot software providers.

You go to a screen before the spins start, where a circle flips revealing different symbols. This slows down, then eventually stops – the symbol it stops on then gets some special corner decorations during the free spins.

While the spins take place your symbol will expand to cover all 3 rows on a reel whenever it can make up wins. It is possible to have 3 full reels covered. This can add some significant wins to your bonus game.

After your spins are completed you will go to a red patterned screen, which displays the total amount of coins that you have won – before returning to the regular game once again.

The other bonus feature in Versailles Gold is the jackpot game which is common to all EGT slots. You will see 4 jackpot amounts above the reels, each one assigned to a different playing card suit. Randomly (and not too often!), a break out game triggers where you get to choose from 12 face-down playing cards. The idea is that you keep on going until you pick 3 of the same suit. This decides which of the jackpots you will win. These are not multi-million dollar pools, though the prizes are still very much worth winning.

There is nothing too remarkable about this game, though for players who enjoy historically themed slots then it is certainly good enough to take for a spin. The classical graphics and sounds make it feel different to many games I have played. The only notable feature is the expanding symbol during the free spins round – though the (shared) EGT jackpots are always possible in the randomly triggered pick-em game.
